In Pennsylvania, workers’ compensation (WC) is a mandatory, no-fault insurance provided by employers to their employees on their first day at the job. This financial aid provides medical benefits and wage loss compensation for any employee who suffers from a work-related injury or illness.
Here are three frequently asked questions about Pennsylvania’s WC benefits:
When can I receive my claim details?
After you inform your employer of your work-related accident or illness, they will report your incident to the State Workers’ Insurance Fund (SWIF). Once the agency reviews your claim, you will receive a letter from them with your assigned claim number.
Additionally, if your injury or illness has caused you to lose more than seven shifts at work, you will be contacted by one of SWIF’s investigators.
What types of WC benefits am I entitled to?
If your claim is approved, your WC insurance will provide coverage for your medical treatments, doctor visits, surgical bills, hospital stays, prescription medicines and/or orthopedic supplies. The state also provides wage loss benefits for any injury or illness that has caused you to have a disability.
Who will pay for my medical bills if my employer is uninsured?
If your employer is found non-compliant with the Worker’s Compensation Act, the state will seek reimbursement from your employer for any benefits paid to you that were sourced from the Uninsured Employers Guaranty Fund. You can also sue your employer directly in civil court.
By understanding your rights and having guidance in the process, you can focus on your recovery while receiving fair compensation for your injury or illness.
