How to safely lift heavy goods

On Behalf of | Jul 29, 2022 | Workplace Injuries

You complete various tasks in your job but sometimes you have to lift heavy goods. If you’re doing this on a regular basis, then you really need to think about protecting your body. Lifting heavy items can result in nasty injuries, especially to the neck, back and legs.

Outlined below are a few tips that should help to protect you from injuries when lifting heavy goods

Assess the situation first

Before attempting to move a heavy object, you really need to assess the situation first. Is the item really something that you can move on your own? For instance, if you work in a warehouse, some items may be so heavy that they require machinery, or at least a team of people to shift them. You shouldn’t be forced into trying to take on a task that jeopardizes your safety.

Use the correct body posture

Generally, you want to let your legs do most of the work. Try to keep your back as straight as possible, and if you have to bend down, make sure you squat rather than kneel. It’s also important to try and bend your knees. If your legs lock up while you’re carrying a heavy object, they could end up giving way. Arching your back or twisting is also best avoided.

If an object is too heavy to lift, inform your superior about the situation. You shouldn’t be forced into taking unnecessary risks. If you have been injured on the job, then you may be entitled to some compensation while you recover. Seeking legal guidance will give you more of an idea about your options.
